My favourite textbooks for surgery are authored by Bailey and Love , Sabiston and Schwartz ( in that order ). I also recommend Pyes surgical handicraft , Farquharson 's and Fischer's manuals for practical aspects.
In today s day and age , I don't think it can be generalized anymore that women choose other branches above surgical branches like orthopedic s or surgery. If they do , it can be a) a matter of personal choice or disinterest in ortho or surgery . b) discouragement to join these branches as they are portrayed to be "difficult" for the female gender.
As someone who chose to do general surgery and have several female friends and colleagues in surgical fields,i can safely say that no branch of medical field ( or life ) is easier or more difficult for any gender. It is a matter of capability , commitment and life-work balance. Not gender .
