Spotting during periods

My wife is supposed to get her periods from yesterday. Instead she had severe back pain and blood spotting is observed from her private parts only yesterday. The blood flow is not much as it is used to be during her periods. We have also planned for family planning so had sexual intercourse few days back. Please suggest if blood spotting is usual during pregnancy or is it usual menstruation issue.
