Spotting and cramps before period

I started birth control almost 2 months ago and I've never missed a pill, I only took a pill a couple hours late about 2 weeks ago. I had unprotected sex about 6 days ago and I have spotting today but I'm not supposed to get my period for another 4 days. I also have period-like cramps but I always get cramps a few days before my period. Could this be a side effect of the birth control?
