Reflux of acid and/or food up into the Esophagus can cause chest pain. This happens due to dysfunction of the valve between food pipe and stomach: this can be due to upward displacement of this valve into chest. This cause the valve to remain open and result in reflux of acid into the food pipe.
To confirm this, you will need further tests: 1. Esophageal Manometry 2. 24 hour pH. These are mostly done by Medical Gastroenterologists. If the diagnosis is confirmed then the cause (Hiatus hernia) can be repaired with surgery which is done Laparoscopic or robotically.
