QUERY REGARDING MRI

Like CT scan is based on radiation principle it is advised not to go for continuous CT scans . But is it the same with MRI ? Does MRI causes X ray radiation and damage our cells ? Or it is safe ? Are there any side effects of an MRI ?

MRI- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a medical imaging technique used in radiology to form pictures of the anatomy and the physiological processes of the body. MRI scanners use strong magnetic fields, magnetic field gradients, and radio waves to generate images of the organs in the body. .. The magnetic field is not harmful, but it may cause some medical devices to malfunction. Most orthopedic implants pose no risk, but you should always tell the technologist if you have any devices or metal in your body. CT scan- A CT scan, or computed tomography scan is a medical imaging procedure that uses computer-processed combinations of many X-ray measurements taken from different angles to produce cross-sectional images of specific areas of a scanned object, allowing the user to see inside the object without cutting. Difference between CT scan &MRI A CT (computerized tomography) scan is a combination of a series of X-ray images taken at different angles; the CT uses a computer to create images from these X-rays. An MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) is a scan that uses magnetic fields and radio waves to produce a detailed image of the body's soft tissues and bones.

Unlike CT, you don’t get exposed to radiation in MRI. but it is harmful for you if you have any metallic implant in your body (fracture rods, pacemaker, clips, etc). If no such implant, MRI is least harmful and you can get it done any number of time

MRI is preferred over CT scan .. it all depends on cases.. CT scan is relatively fast in emergency cases like to decide whether it’s infarct or IC bleed in stroke cases.., MRI can’t be performed if u hv any metal plates or pacemaker inserted... All these investigations including XRay CT MRI are radiation based.. using it wisely when required is necessary.. so leave that cal on ur doctor.. and do not self investigate urself...
