Protected intercourse after D&C.

I had a silent miscarriage at 8w 5d but we came to know at 11w and did a D&C on 24 July. Light bleeding was there from 24 jul to 29 jul. How long now we need to wait for protected intercourse? As doctor's suggested to wait for three menstrual cycle (around 4 months) for protected intercourse to conceive, what test are required before this process?
