Prgnancy during epilepsy
Hi doctor
My wife was primary generalised epilepsy patient which was identified after first delivery. Doctor suggest oxetol 300 daily for 3 years. Now after completion of 3years medication was stoppen. Recently she got malaria fever. During the malaria treatment she got stroke again. So neurologist suggest continue oxetol tablets 2 more years since she didn't got stroke as long as she is using those tablets. Now my problem is we are planning for second pregnancy. Is it safe during oxetol medication? She didn't have no other health problems. First delivery also free delivery. She was at 23 now. So please give suggestion about second pregnancy.
Oxcarbazepine,the drug your wife is taking,effectively at that,is known to be harmful to the developing foetus,though no long term studies are available in humans.
You really have to balance between the any drug's effectiveness and it's side effects.
It obviously is very effective for control of your wife's seizures,so can't be stopped.
Their is always a risk to the foetus,but there being no long term studies in humans,it is a difficult decision,but one to be taken ONLY by you and your wife.
