Difficulty in near vision after the age of 40 years is called presbyopia,
If she is having difficulty for far as well please have it checked. she may be having cataract. If not very advanced then progressive lenses will do otherwise she may require cataract surgery.
You have not mentioned if she is diabetic or if there any painful loss of vision. These have to be checked in person only
Presbyopia is a physiological changes in our eyes... where there is difficulty in near vision only. As she has difficulty for distance and near vision, she may need glasses for distance and near both. Progressive lenses helps to clear distance vision, intermediate vision and near vision.
