Thank you for your question.
The gestation of pregnancy determines which method you can choose. Medical abortion is till 56 days of gestation. Surgical abortion is done by most gynaecologists till12 weeks. After this till 20 weeks special skills and permissions are required to conduct surgical termination of pregnancy by law. The further the pregnancy the more risks involved. Surgical termination can be associated with bleeding, infection, perforation of the uterus, incomplete emptying of the uterus and rarely severe hemorrhage requiring further surgery including hysterectomy in complicated situations. Medical terminations are done at earlier gestations and are associated with risks of pain, bleeding and incomplete termination, retained products requiring surgical intervention in about 10% of cases. Generally the earlier the gestation medical abortion is preferred as success rates are high and surgical intervention is reduced so related complications of anaesthesia etc are also reduced.
Best wishes
