Abortion is a very personal decision and should not be taken lightly at any gestation. All medical procedures have side effects and complications, some short term and some long term. Regret and sadness are also important side effects to consider. If her pregnancy is beyond 8 weeks she would most likely need to go for a surgical termination. This involves side effects such as pain, infection , bleeding, rarely damage to the uterus and adjacent organs, excessive haemorrage requiring further surgery in about 1:1000 cases. Long term effects can be chronic infection, pain, heavier or scanty periods, infertility and damage to the lining of the uterus. Long-term psychological side effects should also be borne in mind.
