Phantom smells and memories

Over the past few years, in random day to day situations, I can smell something that isn't there (phantosmia). I've heard of people having phantosmia but I also relate these particular smells to memories/dreams, I don't know which one. These incidents occur over wide periods but I've also experienced them simultaneously a few times.
