Persistent coughing

My mother, who is 60yrs of age,has been having this persistent cough for sometime now. It seems like a dry cough but sometimes mucus does come during cough. The coughing is not very regular, but happens when she talks for a longer period of time or during sleep. Could you please help me in this regard.
