Numbness in left leg below the knee

Since August last year I have this numbness in my left leg below the knee. Occasionally, I get very painful catches in that leg and off-late I have also started to feel a certain heaviness in that leg and it is now being felt in my left knee also. I have had lower backache problem for many years now.
