My 80 year old father fell down on the road day before yesterday. He is having severe pain on the left arm. He was advised for xray and the local physician prescribed some pain killers and gave him some arm brace to restrict the movement. Need some advice on the X-RAY. Is it normal ?

It's a fracture. Better consult an orthopedic surgeon near you who can give you advice about surgery or conservative treatment based on his condition at present

There is a fracture in proximal humerus on left side with multiple fragments which are partially displaced... How bad is the pain and swelling right now.. Usually surgery is required for these type of fractures..
Next Steps
Since his age is more, fracture may be conserved with shoulder Immobilizer but there is a possibility of stiffness and reduced movements of shoulder later on after fracture heals.. If he is physically fit and active, you may visit a nearby hospital and take opinion of orthopaedic surgeon so that he may examine clinically and determine of surgery can be done..
Health Tips
Avoid movements of the shoulder joint, start ice fomentation,  take analgesic with anti inflammatory medicine,  take calcium and vitamin d supplements which will promote bone healing..
