We are planning to adopt a baby of about 2.3 years. But when we met the child, she was with us (we, other members of the home and her caregiver) for a period of 2-3 hours. But she DID NOT UTTERED A SINGLE WORD. In her medical report, her health was written normal, and in language development section for "can speak word" Yes written while for "can speak sentence" No written. We were of d view that a 2 year child cant speak sentences, but her silence was strange.
HOW TO UNDERSTAND A TWO YEAR OLD NOT MUTE during such a short period? Is the remark cant speak sentences is pointer towards any problem.? What are the normal test we can do.? Is the child shy?
Fyi : the child was responsive, followed instructions, even expressed herself when a we asked something by shaking her Head.
I think adoption center give child for some time to the adopting family to spend some time if she is saying words that mean she is not mute at least. For her age sentences is also right but kid's from orphanage usually have different environment so may be lagging in speech, social interaction but with proper warmth,love care they may come in main stream like a children's from good happy family. Also hearing evaluation if possible get it done. You will have to meet her frequently to find out the problem. Usually all basic test like CBC, thyroid hormone,HIv,Hbsag,VDRL, Mantoux test and X-ray chest for T.B.
Better visit some pediatrician nearby tell your concern he will suggest you for investigation,he can see the child also,if you bring the child to him
