Having issues in the both the toe nails for past 6 years. Done partial removal and complete removal multiple times but somehow it causes problem again after 6-8 months. Nearby General Surgeon is suggesting to do the same procedure and also he says if you want you shall go for complete nail bed removal. He says that nail will not regrow anymore once after the procedure. And that procedure needs to be performed under General anesthesia but not with Local anesthesia. Please let me know your thoughts. And From the first occurrence , I wash my nail regularly, trim it only when it grows outside the finger , I trim it only in straight manner and not curved cut.. Not wearing Shoes for past 5 years and it is occasional only..please help me out.. Let me know whether I go for nail removal or the complete procedure for removing the nail bed. Will the nail growth really stops once after the nail bed removals? Do we need general anesthesia for that? And what is approx Cost for surgery in Chennai,TN.

Its fungal infection with ingrowing toe nail. Consult a dermatologist along with a surgeon. Total nail excision with chemical cauterization of nail bed in the groove with phenol+camphor solution will work out well as it is antifungal too.

Hello. There is nothing to be scared. Your right toe nail colour has changed? Do any of your family members have the same issue? If yes, then how are they managing? This problem is sometimes seen in families. Nail bed removal - does not mean removal of entire tissue, rather only that portion is removed from the sides of the toes, so the central nail can regrow. The skin folds at sides then join the remaining nail bed, and recurrence is rare - if properly done. Ankle block if patient is anxious, else ring block is fine. Stitches are required - so adequate leave from work is a good idea. Cost will vary by the hospital and the specialist (plastic surgeon/foot surgeon / general surgeon).
