Urticaria, commonly known as hives, is a skin condition characterized by the sudden appearance of red, raised, and itchy welts or bumps on the skin. These welts can vary in size and shape and often come and go within a few hours or days. Here's some patient information on urticaria: **Causes:** - Urticaria can be triggered by various factors, including allergic reactions, infections, medications, stress, and physical stimuli like pressure or cold temperatures. **Symptoms:** - Itchy, red welts on the skin. - Swelling and sometimes a burning sensation. - The welts may change in size and shape or move to different areas of the body. **Duration:** - Acute urticaria typically lasts for a few hours to six weeks and is often linked to an identifiable trigger. - Chronic urticaria persists for more than six weeks and might not have a clear cause. **Treatment and Management:** - Avoid known triggers, if possible. - In some cases, a doctor might prescribe stronger medications. - Managing stress can also be beneficial. - If urticaria persists, it's important to consult a healthcare professional for further evaluation. Urticaria can be uncomfortable, but it is typically not a serious or long-term condition. If you or someone you know is experiencing urticaria and it's causing significant discomfort, consult a healthcare provider for proper diagnosis and management.
