Gallstones without symptoms does not require surgery. Only around 30 percent of people with gall stones eventually have symptoms.
Symptoms related to gall bladder stones may range from pain lasting a few minutes to jaundice to fever. Once you develop symptoms, it is highly likely that you will get repeated episodes and surgery is recommended. Indications for surgery in asymptomatic gallstones include hemolytic disease, poor access to healthcare(people working in merchant navy etc) or as part of another abdominal surgery. There is no medical treatment for gall stones.
