Esophageal varices are a manifestation of portal hypertension in patients with cirrhosis / chronic liver disease. Varicella banding (EVL) is done to prevent banding from large high risk and/or bleeding varices. To reduce pressures in the varices, beta blockers are started. The long term solution for patients with cirrhosis who are not medically responsive is liver transplantation.
