hi.. paronychia is a skin infection that occurs mainly around fingernails and toenails.It happens when the skin around the nail is irritated and injured. Nail biting,chewing, people whohave their hands wet for a long time usually are more prone to get infection. It can be treated with topical ointments and a physician should be consulted in view of any abscess or pus formation ,fever
There are also some precautions that can be taken such as
-avoid biting or picking nails if u have the habit
- keep nails trimmed and smooth
- avoid cutting nails too short
-use clear nail clippers
- soaking the infected nail in warm water for few minutes and them completely drying them helps in acute cases
- always dry ur feet completely before putting socks and make sure the socks are changed everyday
- use gloves when handling harsh chemicals
