Hi, I am Dr. Atul Kumar Nimawat MS ENT.
Microtia is a congenital condition where the external ear (pinna) is underdeveloped or absent. It may occur on one or both sides and is sometimes associated with hearing loss due to ear canal or middle ear malformations.
Ear reconstruction surgery is a well-established treatment option to restore the shape and appearance of the external ear, and sometimes function (with combined hearing restoration procedures if needed).
Pros of Ear Reconstruction Surgery:
• Improved cosmetic appearance and psychological confidence
• Permanent solution (especially autologous type)
• No need for external prosthesis or adhesive
• Can be combined with hearing restoration procedures (e.g., bone-anchored hearing
aids)
Cons / Risks:
• Requires multiple surgeries and general anesthesia
• Possibility of infection, graft rejection, or scarring
• Rib cartilage harvesting may cause chest wall discomfort
• Medpor implants may have a higher risk of extrusion or exposure
• Cosmetic results vary depending on surgeon expertise and tissue condition
