Disulfiram is an aversive agent which when mixed with alcohol interferes with its metabolism and causes a discomforting experience to the patient. The discomfort can range from nausea palpitations abdominal pain sweating flushing and can be severe to cause a ICU hospitalisation and can lead to Sudden cardiac arrest.
Addictions can disturb family harmony, but overcoming addiction ultimately requires the individual’s own determination and effort, with the family providing essential support and encouragement.
Consent of the patient is a very essential component of starting any treatment and a must also for Disulfiram treatment.
Comorbid hypertension is an added risk factor to give Disulfiram unsupervised.
