My father has issues of high potassium from 5 years. His regular medicines are continue. Before 1 month, creatinine was 0.85 but potassium level reached 6.20. So doctor started 1 tablet Floricot 100 and 0.5 Lasix 40 mg. Now his creatinine is 1.30 and potassium is 4.40. But he feels uneasiness in breathing and swelling in legs. Doctor has told that water is clogged inside body and lungs. Doctor advised to take 1 Lasix 40 in morning and 0.5 Lasix in evening for 3 days. I have fear that this may increase creatinine sharply and damage kidneys. Is there any other way to get away water clogged inside? Please guide.
Hi
Mild elevation in creatinine on diuretic (Lasix) is expected.
However his kidney issue may not be cause of swelling and breathing difficulty. Need urine report as well along with serum albumin. He will also need cardiac check up.
If ther is difficulty in breathing, lasix is needed.
A small rise in creatinine is acceptable to avoid the water retention, since breathing difficulty is more dangerous than a small rise in creatinine.
He should restrict his water intake to less than one litre per day. Don't worry, Kidneys won't be damaged by the lasix.
