In 1971, abortion was made legal in India when the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act was passed with an aim to reduce illegal abortion and maternal mortality. It can be done at any government hospital or with a hospital registered by a gynecologist for the purpose. It is usually done with pills upto 12 weeks and later a minor operative may be required upto 20 weeks
