Hello! Pharyngitis or sore throat involves the following: Symptoms – enlarged tonsils, tonsillar exudates, cervical adenopathy, fever, rash. Physical Exam – oral cavity, tonsils, may show erythema, exudates Diagnosis – • CBC (inc WBC) • Throat Cx (positive for strep, influenza) • Rapid strep, mono spot for EBV Treatment – • Penicillin V 500 mg PO BID x 10 days (Penicillin G 800,000 units PO BID x 10 days). For children < 27 kg, give 250mg), OR • IM Penicillin G 1.2 million units x 1. For children < 27kg, give IM Penicillin G 600,000 units x 1. If allergic: amoxicillin.
