Suffering from Dry cough .

My father is suffering from dry cough since last two days. He is having cough more during daytime. He is having this dry cough frequently. He will take some dry cough syrup . It will cure for some days. But it repeats after few days. I want to know what is the root cause for this dry cough. How to cure it permanently ?
