According to the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), India guidelines (2023) for rabies re-exposure, if an individual has completed a full post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) regimen within the last 5 years, then the post-exposure management for a subsequent Category II or III exposure is as follows:
Re-exposure Management (within 5 years of prior full PEP):
No need for Rabies Immunoglobulin (RIG).
Only 2 doses of rabies vaccine are recommended:
Day 0 (date of exposure)
Day 3
This is known as the 2-dose booster schedule.
Management:
Rabies vaccine on Day 0 and Day 3
No RIG required
Local wound cleaning is essential with soap and water for 20 - 30 minutes
Note: This applies only if the child was immunocompetent and received a full PEP earlier.
