Perventricular lakumalacia
A 3-month-old baby has been diagnosed with periventricular leukomalacia (PVL), and the report indicates the presence of water cysts measuring 2 to 3mm. The baby is currently very active, and hearing and vision tests have been passed. However, we still have concerns and would like to know what steps we can take to manage this condition and what treatments might be appropriate. Could you please suggest what actions we can take going forward?
These changes are generally seen in Preterm babies, due to decreased oxygen supply to brain.
However in newborns and infants, the brain has high plasticity, which means it has high capacity of re-organising the connections, which were destroyed as a result of a stroke or Hypoxia or whatever event it might be. For this Child needs aggressive physiotherapy/rehabilitation.
Children with these changes in brain may be normal, or may have delayed milestones with learning difficulties or may rarely have retardation.
Child requires extra care if he has delayed milestones or leaning difficulties.
