Hi, me and my husband are traveling to Leh in Sept, I have been reading a lot about AMS there and the suggested tablet is Diamox and to consult a travel doctor for any other advise. My husband is slightly asthamatic when traveling in coastal regions and Leh being the opposite of it and dusty, I am not sure whether any additional precaution is required for him. Also I would look like to know who is a travel doctor that I can consult.? What is diamox tablet and is it safe to take it without medical advise?
Diamox is a priscription drug.It is used for pulmonary edema.If your husband is severely asthamatic avoid going to leh.And you wish get him checked from local pulmonologist before going.
Hello, Acute Mountain Sickness, which occurs due to low oxygen level in high altitude, is best avoided by climbing to high altitude slowly. Diamox or other drugs are not recommended for prevention as a routine and are better avoided. In your husband's case, since he is prone for asthma, there is also possibility of asthma becoming worse in cold/dusty condition.
