Tinnitus is the perception of sound (ringing, buzzing, hissing, whistling) in the ears or head without an external source.
Common causes
• Hearing loss (age-related or noise exposure)
• Ear wax or ear infection
• Eustachian tube dysfunction
• Noise exposure (headphones, loud sounds)
• Drugs (e.g., high-dose aspirin, some antibiotics)
• Stress, anxiety, lack of sleep
• Hypertension, anemia,
thyroid disorders
• TMJ problems
• Rarely, vestibular schwannoma (especially unilateral tinnitus)
