I am taking myself amitriptyline 50mg and chlordiazepoxide 10mg since 15days for headache, sleeplessness low mood. I am very benefited from this drug.But when I consulted a Psychiatrist he says amitriptyline 50 mg is very large dose. Take sertraline 50mg and ativan 1mg for ten days. And half the dose of amitriptyline for seven days and then stop. Please give proper suggestions. I think amitriptyline is best.

Straight away 50 mg is a bit high dose of amitryptylin. Start low.. go slow is the titration policy of intelligent psychiatrist. Even if you are okay with 50 mg at this point of time... you may experience long term side effects like postural hypotension, chronic constipation etc over a period of time. When a more modern and smoother molecule is available go for it. Reduce the dose to 25 mg and add tablet sertraline 25 mg at night. Thank you

If you got benifited by amitriptyline and don't have any significant side effect by it. It is better to continue amitriptyline rather than changing it. Frequent change of psychotropic medication without reason is not a good practice.
