Fair Skin tone.. Glutathione

There has been many claims by various soap and oral tablet company that they contain glutathione and help in getting lowered melanin and fairer skin.. Are these claims really true or even worth trying. Can medically you get a fairer skin and how long would the treatment take.. as higher pigmentation is good for UV protection will skin lightening damage the immunity.
