Cataract with diabetic Ratinopathy

Hello Dr. My mother has insulin dependant diabetes for last 25 years. From last two years her vision has affected. Her right eye was diagnosed with Macular edema as well as cataract. Whereas for left eye laser treatment is been done for additional blood vessels in Oct 2020. Now 3 days back she started seeing black spots in left eye, when showed to dr, he says there was bleeding but can't do anything unless cataract is been operated. One who does cataract is not giving any assurance that vision will be restored even after surgery. I want to ask about the chances of vision recovery or restoration.

In diabetic patients these are quite  common problems. Neither the doctor nor you can do much . But We can't leave her as such. Hence Please have faith in your doctor and do as he advice.

Bleeding must have occured from the immature blood vessels that must have grown on the retina due to Diabetes.Retinal laser helps to seal these leaking blood vessels.  However a clear view of retina is needed to view these vessels and seal them and that can't be done if cataract is present and also with the blood present in the vitreous. That's the reason why your doctor suggested to go ahead with the cataract surgery first. Chances of vision recovery in diabetic retinopathy isn't very predictable. It's mostly related to the area of retina involved and blood sugar levels.
