Many young children (2–5 years) sometimes lie on their tummy or in a cobra-like position and touch their private parts. This is usually a normal self-soothing or exploration behavior. It is not harmful and is not a sign of sexual exposure.
We check for red flags like pain, itching, discharge, injuries, or if the child seems unaware during episodes. If she stops when distracted and is otherwise normal, it is almost always harmless.
