Desmin is an intermediate filament protein in muscle cells. In normal tissues, the antibody reacts with both striated and smooth muscle cells. This labeling is confined to the Z band in skeletal and cardiac muscle giving a characteristic striated appearance. In neoplastic tissues, the antibody reacts with tumors of myogenic origin such as those arising from smooth muscle (leiomyosarcomas) and those derived from striated muscle (rhabdomyosarcomas).
