Tuberculosis may be a lethal disease. Its ocular manifestations are commonly associated with severe difficulties in diagnosis and therapy; furthermore, it may cause blindness. DNA amplification methods may allow early detection of small amounts of Mycobacterium tuberculosis DNA to afford the possibility of prompt diagnosis. We evaluated a nested polymerase chain reaction (nPCR) assay for detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis DNA in aqueous and vitreous. In recent years, use of techniques based on DNA amplification to detect small amounts of genomic sequences from fluids or tissues has allowed us to diagnose or confirm infections that were previously difficult to detect. Polymerase chain reaction is one such technique. Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) DNA has been detected in many body sites such as central nervous system (CNS), liver, and joints as well as in ocular fluids. However, in ocular fluids experience is still limited. Thus, the purpose of this study was to detect MTB DNA with nested PCR in aqueous and vitreous of patients with uveitis.
