What is a Garlic allergy?

Garlic is a commonly used spice in any cuisine. The botanical name of garlic is Allium sativum. Garlic belongs to the Liliaceae family and is related to other members of the species which include onions, shallots, leek, chives, etc. and is used in both culinary and medical purposes. Few reports have been recorded in people regarding allergic reactions to garlic. Clinical reports have been recorded that if an individual is known to be allergic to onions then it is more likely that the individual is allergic to garlic as well and vice-versa, This type of phenomenon is called as cross-reactivity. Allergic reactions to garlic occur when the body of an individual accidentally interprets the proteins present in garlic as antigens/ foreign bodies and develop specific antibodies as a response. These antibodies respond whenever an individual is exposed to the proteins present in garlic.
