1. What are the causes of numbness?
The following are the causes of numbness: staying in the same position for a long time, pressure on the nerves, viral infection, lack of blood supply, low levels of vitamin B12, sodium, potassium or calcium, animal bites, lack of blood supply, diabetes, nerve damage, radiation therapy, narrowing of blood vessels, stroke, conditions like multiple sclerosis, migraine and cancer.
2. Which body parts can be affected by numbness?
You may feel numbness in your hands, feet, leg and arms, due to the pressure on the nerves. In multiple sclerosis (nerve covering is degenerated), you may feel numbness on the face and on other body parts too. In some conditions like Raynaud’s disease (narrowing of blood vessels) you may have numbness in nose, nipples and ear. In hernia, you may feel numbness in the groin and thighs.

Medicines are given to control blood sugar in diabetes, vitamin supplements in deficiency and medicines like antidepressants and corticosteroids are also given.

5. For what duration will I need the treatment for numbness?
The duration of treatment depends upon the cause of numbness. Sometimes numbness may go on its own. Numbness due to cancer treatment will not need any other treatment. It goes away in few days after the cancer treatment is over. When a sciatic nerve is involved, you may need four to six weeks of treatment. Many times long term treatment is also required.
