The signs and symptoms commonly experienced by individuals are dry skin, itching (sometimes severe) along with redness of the affected area (usually in arms, legs, chest, neck and knees). The skin becomes thick, cracked, red and scaly after itching.

Atopic dermatitis is diagnosed by a physical examination of the affected area and by thorough review of medical history of the patient. The presence of red, scally and itchy skin confirms the condition of atopic dermatitis.
