What is an Allergy?

The most common chronic condition worldwide is Allergy. The symptoms of an allergy range from making an individual miserable to putting them in life-threatening conditions. An allergic reaction begins in the immune system so when allergy occurs the immune system mistakes an otherwise harmless substance as an invader this substance is called an allergen. The immune system overreacts due to allergens and overproduces IgE antibodies and travel to cells hence releases histamines and other chemicals causing allergic reactions.

How is allergy diagnosed?

The doctor might ask the patient about medical history, food habits, travel history, etc

Following tests may also be prescribed by the doctor:

1. Skin test - a small prick will be made on the skin and exposed with the believed allergy-causing substance. If a small hive occurs at the site then the allergic reaction to that particular allergen is confirmed. 
2. Blood test - ablood sample is sent to a medical laboratory, where it can be tested for evidence of sensitivity to possible allergens.

What are the home remedies for allergy?

1. Saline nasal irrigation for symptoms like blocked nasal canals and sinuses. 
2. Reduce the exposure to the dust mites, using soft detergents, washing stuffed toys in hot water, and maintaining humidity, etc.
3. Reduce moisture in damp areas such as your bath and kitchen by using ventilation fans and dehumidifiers.
