Rheumatoid Arthritis, Ankylosing Spondylitis, Psoriatic Arthritis, Lupus, Sjogren Syndrome, Dermatomyositis and systemic sclerosis are some common diseases treated by rheumatologist.
Arthritis treatment is provided by a Rheumatologist. Patients with arthritis, meaning joint pain and swelling, can suffer from knee pain, stiffness in fingers in the morning, hand joints pain, pain and numbness in hand while sleeping, finger swelling and shoulder pain. Some patients develop lower back pain, uveitis (eye problem), pain in heels, ankle pain and swelling and skin problems like psoriasis with joint pain. Rheumatic diseases can affect lungs, skin and kidneys apart from joints. Patients can develop osteoporosis (weakness of bones) and vitamin d deficiency requiring specific treatment.
Arthritis treatment is done by using various medicines commonly called dmards. Most of these medicines give good results when taken under guidance of a rheumatologist. Frequent blood monitoring is required with some of these medicines. Newer drugs called biologic therapy are now being used in advanced cases of arthritis. Patients need physiotherapy (like knee exercises) along with medications. Diet in arthritis should be balanced and discussed with the rheumatologist.
Patients of arthritis can be treated without surgery, if medical treatment is started early. In advanced cases, however, surgeries like knee replacement or hip replacement might be required.
