After having a bad experience with another gastroenterologist, we asked for a recommendation from one of our trusted doctors. He suggested going to Dr.Kanakia at Lilavati Hospital.

After reporting at the OPD and making the payment (Rs.1500), we were given an appointment slip to put in the doctor's office and asked to wait until he called us. We waited a little while as the doctor was not in; then doctor came to his room, went in, looked at the appointments and called us in. He listened to all my issues, asked a bunch or questions, examined me and recommended to get colonoscopy done but he didn't push for it. He said if I wanted, we could wait a little while and see if medications helped but I didn't want to wait any more since I had issues going on for over 6 months. So we scheduled the colonoscopy for the next day.

I was asked to stop eating and drinking the next morning by 7AM since the procedure was scheduled for 1:30PM. I followed that. The Peglec that was supposed to be taken, caused a few loose motions as expected. I stay an hour away from the hospital so it was slightly inconvenient to get there in this state but I managed. We were asked to go to the endoscopy area.

I met a nurse there, showed her the paper given by Dr.Kanakia the previous day and she asked me to wait. Then she checked whether the doctor was going to be available immediately. When he told her yes, she asked me to change into hospital clothes and I was taken in for the endoscopy.

The doctor greeted me and once again explained about the procedure. He mentioned that if anything abnormal was found, he would do a biopsy but I shouldn't be scared. He said that he won't administer anaesthesia right away because in most cases, it is not needed. However, if I felt too much pain, he will call in an anaesthetist and get me the anaesthesia.

We started the procedure and it did not hurt initially. I was able to see what was happening on the monitor. After some time, the blowing of air started causing a lot of pain. I told this to the doctor but he said that we were more than halfway done and if I could manage to bear it for 5 more minutes, I won't need the anaesthesia. I agreed to go without the anaesthesia and truly in 5 minutes, the pain subsided. It was still there but much less.

The doctor said that he did not notice anything to be concerned about and asked me to get changed. I was done with everything in 15 minutes. When I came out, my mother thought that my colonoscopy appointment got canceled and was surprised when I told her that it was already done. We went to the doctor and he explained the results and said there was nothing to worry about. He wrote down some medication and said I can go to a local doctor for diarrhoea and constipation issues. Only if I noticed blood during loose motions should I be a little concerned and come to him again. After making the payment, we got my file with the DVD and report.

I was happy that the doctor wasn't pushy and that he explained everything properly to my mom and me. He did the procedure right and alleviated any fears before and after it was done. I would definitely recommend him to others.

Such an honest and no nonsense man, he is a very friendly doctor I would surely recommend anyone who has gastro problems to consult him. Best thing every thing is digital, even his prescription No doctor's handwriting issues. He also asks for digital copies of reports on mail So no old world style of dealing with a doctor.

Not only is Dr Kanakia a good listener but also a truly devoted professional who doesn't unnecessarily recommend medication. For any patient, more than medicines, it is the assurance that there is cure which helps in speeding up the recovery process. Dr Kanakia gave that assurance to us when other doctors took the money minded approach. I can't be more grateful to him for handling my father's critical case.
