1. What are a dentist's qualifications in India?

In India, a dentist needs to complete a 4-year undergraduate degree BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) followed by an internship for at least one year. The BDS must be from a college whose courses are recognized by the Dental Council of India (DCI). Further specialisation can be pursued through short-term courses or a masters degree. 

2. Is root canal procedure painful?

If you have facial swelling or fever before a root canal, your dentist may give you antibiotics beforehand to kill the infection and reduce your pain.

4. Can you cure gum disease without a dentist’s help?

While gingivitis is mild and can be managed and reversed by maintaining proper oral hygiene, you should consult a dentist at the earliest for periodontitis.

As recommended for adults, children should also visit the dentist at least every 6 months. Yes, dentists offer teeth whitening as part of their services. Professional teeth whitening includes applying a peroxide-based bleaching solution to your teeth, and using heat, light, or a combination of the two to amplify the results.

7. How do dentists remove tartar?    

Tartar is the buildup of hard calcified deposits on your teeth and gums. A dentist uses a mirror to see and a scaler (scraping tool) to get rid of plaque and tartar around your gum line and in between your teeth. Subsequently, the dentist usually brushes your teeth with a high-powered electric brush and a gritty (grainy) toothpaste to remove any tartar left behind from the scaler.

8. What type of mirror is used by dentists?

Dentists use a concave mirror to provide a larger and brighter image of the inside of your mouth, making it easier for him/her to see the back of your mouth. A concave mirror has a reflecting surface which is bent inward while the outward surface is polished. It provides a larger image without inverting it.
