V-Parin 25000 IU Injection is an anticoagulant used to prevent the formation and growth of blood clots in patients with certain specific medical conditions. It is also used to prevent blood clots that may potentially form during certain medical procedures. It also helps in preventing the formation of blood clots in catheters that are placed in veins for a prolonged period of time.

Allergy

This medicine is not recommended for use in patients with a known allergy to heparin or any other inactive ingredient present along with it.

Uncontrolled active bleeding

This medicine is not recommended for use in patients having uncontrolled active bleeding except when it is associated with Disseminated intravascular coagulation.

Inability to perform coagulation tests

This medicine is not recommended for use in patients who cannot undergo coagulation tests at appropriate intervals. This is generally applicable for patients receiving full dose therapy, not for those on a fixed low-dose therapy.

Thrombocytopenia

This medicine is not recommended for use in patients with a known history of thrombocytopenia associated with the use of heparin.

General warnings

Hemorrhage and risk factors

Use of this medicine should be initiated only after internal bleeding or hemorrhage and associated risk factors are ruled out. All the underlying causes of bleeding such as peptic ulcer disease, hemophilia, impaired hemostasis, etc. should also be ruled out before the administration of this medicine.

Thrombocytopenia

Use of this medicine may cause low levels of platelets (thrombocytopenia). It is advised to monitor the blood platelet levels at regular intervals while this medicine is administered. Appropriate dose adjustments or replacement with a suitable alternative may be necessary based on the clinical condition of the patient.

Use in elderly

This medicine should be used with extreme caution in the elderly population since the risk of adverse effects is significantly high. Appropriate dose adjustments and frequent clinical monitoring are advised for such patients to safely use this medicine.

Benzyl alcohol as preservative

Dosage forms containing benzyl alcohol as a preservative should not be administered to neonates, infants, and pregnant or breastfeeding women. Benzyl alcohol may cause a fatal adverse event known as Gasping syndrome in neonates and infants.

Liver/kidney disease

This medicine should be used with caution in patients having an impairment of normal liver/kidney function. Appropriate dose adjustments and frequent clinical monitoring are recommended for such patients. Replacement with a suitable alternative may be necessary based on the clinical condition.

Hyperkalemia

Use of this medicine may cause an increase in blood potassium levels (hyperkalemia) and associated complications. Close monitoring of potassium levels may be necessary based on the clinical condition.

Osteoporosis

Use of this medicine in high doses for a prolonged duration may cause osteoporosis and associated complications.

Other medicines

This medicine may interact with many other medicines and may cause severe side effects. Hence, you are advised to report the use of all medicines including herbs and supplements to the doctor before beginning treatment with this medicine.

Occurrence of side effects

It is possible that you may experience certain side effects after the use of this medicine has been stopped. Report any instances of unusual symptoms to the doctor immediately.

Smoking and use of tobacco products

Use of this medicine is not recommended in patients with an active peptic ulcer disease due to the increased risk of severe internal bleeding and hemorrhage which may be fatal.

Active bleeding disorder

Use of this medicine is not recommended in patients with an active bleeding disorder due to the increased risk of excessive bleeding which may be fatal. However, this medicine can be used for treating patients diagnosed with disseminated intravascular coagulation.

Kidney disease

This medicine should be used with extreme caution in patients having a kidney disease or impairment of normal renal function due to the increased risk of excessive bleeding. Appropriate dose adjustments and close monitoring of kidney function are recommended for such patients. Replacement with a suitable alternative may be necessary based on the clinical condition.

Thrombocytopenia

This medicine should be used with extreme caution in patients with Thrombocytopenia due to the increased risk of worsening of the patient's condition. Appropriate tests including blood platelet counts must be done before starting therapy and at regular intervals during therapy to safely use this medicine. Replacement with a suitable alternative may be necessary based on the clinical condition.

Hyperkalemia

This medicine should be used with caution due to the increased risk of hyperkalemia (increased serum potassium levels) which may cause severe side effects such as an irregular heart rhythm, muscle paralysis, etc. This risk is especially higher in elderly patients with heart diseases, kidney diseases, or diabetes mellitus. Appropriate tests must be conducted to determine the potassium levels before and during treatment with this medicine. Replacement with a suitable alternative may be necessary based on the clinical condition.
Food interactions
This medicine should be used with caution with fish oil or other food products containing omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids due to the increased risk of bleeding. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any unusual bleeding or bruising, dizziness, weakness, and the presence of blood in sputum/urine/stool. Your doctor/dietitian may suggest appropriate changes in your diet to avoid this interaction.
