Ropivacaine

Description

Ropivacaine is a numbing medicine used before surgical procedures. It blocks nerve signals from a specific part of the body and is categorized as a local anesthetic medicine. It is also used to proovide anesthesia during delivery to ease the labor pain.

Allergy

Warnings for special population

Pregnancy

This medicine is not recommended for use in pregnant women unless necessary. Medical supervision is advised while administering this medicine.

This medicine is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women unless necessary. Medical supervision is advised while administering this medicine.
General warnings

Malignant hyperthermia

Use of this medicine can cause Malignant hyperthermia characterized by a rapid rise in the body temperature and severe muscle pain. The administration of this medicine should be stopped immediately if such symptoms are observed.

Liver disease

This medicine should be used with caution in patients having an impairment of normal liver function. Appropriate dose adjustments and monitoring of liver enzymes during the course of treatment are advised.

Kidney disease

This medicine should be used with caution in patients having an impairment of normal kidney function. Appropriate dose adjustments and monitoring of kidney function during the course of treatment are advised.

Monitoring of ECG

Monitoring of ECG, heart rate, blood pressure and other vital parameters is recommended while this medicine is administered as an anesthetic before surgical procedures.

Heart rhythm disorders

This medicine should be used with extreme caution in patients having a pre-existing heart condition. Any incidences of heart rhythm abnormalities in the past or present should be reported to the doctor before this medicine is administered.

Drowsiness and impairment of thinking

Use of this medicine may cause drowsiness and may impair the thinking capabilities and hence, driving vehicles or operating machinery after taking this medicine is not recommended.

Respiratory depression

Use of this medicine has been associated with severe breathing difficulties requiring immediate medical intervention and hence, it should be used with caution in patients having a pre-existing breathing disorder.

Long lasting effect

Some anesthetics may continue to show their effect for a prolonged duration of time. Contact your doctor if you have any joint pain or stiffness, muscle weakness and other associated symptoms after 1-2 weeks of administration of Ropivacaine.

Missed Dose

Since this medicine is mostly given before a surgical procedure, the likelihood of missing a dose is very less.

Overdose

Contact your doctor immediately if you suspect an overdose of this medicine. Symptoms of an overdose may include severe nervousness, convulsions, heart rhythm changes, fall in blood pressure, etc.

Kidney Disease

This medicine should be used with extreme caution in patients having an impairment of kidney function. Suitable dose adjustments and clinical monitoring are advised, especially if the intended use is for a long duration.

Heart rhythm disorders

This medicine should be used with caution in patients having a pre-existing condition of the heart that affects the normal rhythm. Appropriate tests must be conducted to rule out any rhythm disorder before this medicine is administered.

Hypovolemic disorders

This medicine should be used with caution in patients having conditions which cause a decrease in the volume of blood in the body. Hypovolemia could be attributed to excessive and prolonged diarrhea, severe burns, excessive vomiting, etc. It can also be a result of blood donation or consumption of alcohol in excess.
Food interactions
Avoid or minimize the use of caffeine or related products while taking this medicine. Any medicinal product containing caffeine as an ingredient should be carefully administered along with Ropivacaine.
