Phenazopyridine

Description

Phenazopyridine is used for the symptomatic relief of pain, burning, irritation, discomfort, increased urination, increased urge to urinate, etc. resulting from a lower urinary tract infection, injury, catheter, surgery, or any examination procedures. This medicine does not cure the urinary tract infection but relieves the symptoms associated with it.

Use in elderly

This medicine should be used with extreme caution in elderly patients due to the increased risk of renal insufficiency. Close monitoring of kidney function tests is necessary while receiving this medicine. Use in Children

This medicine is not recommended for use in children below 12 years of age since the safety and efficacy of use are not clinically established.

Gastrointestinal Disturbances

This medicine should be used with extreme caution in patients with gastrointestinal disturbances such as stomach pain, heartburn, diarrhea, constipation, nausea, vomiting, etc. due to the increased risk of worsening of the patient’s condition.

Discoloration and staining

Use of this medicine may produce an orange to red color urine and feces. It may also cause discoloration of body fluids and stain contact lenses in some patients. Report to your doctor immediately if you experience yellowing of the skin or eyes or in case of any unusual signs and symptoms. Appropriate dose adjustments or replacement with a suitable alternative may be required in some cases based on the clinical condition of the patient.

This medicine should be used with caution in patients with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase(G-6-PD) deficiency due to the increased risk of hemolytic anemia and methemoglobinemia (a blood disorder that causes reduced supply of oxygen to tissues and organs).
