Description
Nitrogesic 0.2% Ointment is used to treat pain associated with anal fissure. An anal fissure is a small tear of skin around your anus (the opening through which stool passes out of your body). This medicine relaxes the muscles around your anus which helps in increasing the blood flow, thus reducing pain. Nitrogesic 0.2% Ointment shows side effects like anal discomfort (itching or burning sensation), irritation, rash or pain at the area of application and headaches. If you experience severe headaches, wipe off the ointment and consult your doctor about whether you should discontinue using this medication. Nitrogesic 0.2% Ointment should be used as per your doctor’s advice. Before using this ointment, make sure your hands are clean and follow all of the instructions given in the package leaflet. Nitrogesic 0.2% Ointment is not recommended for children and adolescents under the age of 18 years. Inform your doctor about any other health issues you have or if you are undergoing any medical treatment before using Nitrogesic 0.2% Ointment. Consult your doctor before using this medicine if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are breastfeeding.

Allergy

Anaemia

Anaemia is a condition in which your blood does not have enough healthy red blood cells. Avoid Nitrogesic 0.2% Ointment if you are anaemic or have low levels of haemoglobin (blood cells that carry oxygen throughout your body) in your blood. Large doses of this medicine may cause the haemoglobin to lose its capacity to carry oxygen. Thus, the presence of anaemia may worsen your condition.

General warnings

Fall in blood pressure

Long-term use or higher doses of Nitrogesic 0.2% Ointment can cause a fall in blood pressure and can make you feel dizzy, especially while getting up from a lying or sitting position. Monitor your blood pressure regularly to prevent such conditions.

Other diseases

If you have or ever had any problems with your heart, lung, thyroid, kidney, liver etc., then inform your doctor before taking Nitrogesic 0.2% Ointment. This medicine can interact with the existing disease which may worsen your condition.

Methemoglobinemia

Methemoglobinemia (MetHb) is a blood disorder in which an abnormal amount of methemoglobin is produced. Methemoglobin is a form of haemoglobin that carries oxygen throughout your body. Use of Nitrogesic 0.2% Ointment may affect your red blood cells and cause changes in the haemoglobin resulting in hypoxia (low oxygen reaching the tissues). Symptoms are blue-coloured skin, headache, fatigue, lack of energy etc. Your doctor may discontinue the use of this medicine if you experience any such signs and symptoms.

Skin irritation

Your doctor may advise you to discontinue the use of Nitrogesic 0.2% Ointment if you experience any skin irritation such as burning or itching.

Missed Dose

If you have missed a dose of Nitrogesic 0.2% Ointment, then use it as soon as you can, but if it is almost time for the second dose then skip the missed one. Do not double the dose as it can lead to severe side effects such as skin irritation.

Overdose

If you have accidentally or intentionally used more than the prescribed dose of Nitrogesic 0.2% Ointment, then you might feel some side effects like headache, itching and burning at the site of application. Consult your doctor immediately if that happens.

Hypotension

Hypotension refers to low blood pressure. Nitrogesic 0.2% Ointment should be used with extreme caution if you have low blood pressure (<90 mm Hg). This medication may further lower your blood pressure and can worsen your condition.

Before applying Nitrogesic 0.2% Ointment, wear disposable gloves or use a cling film to protect your finger. Then, from the tube, apply 2.5 cm of the ointment to your finger (there is a measuring line on the packaging to help you). Then, carefully apply the ointment slightly inside your anus with your finger. Insert your finger up to the first finger joint to ensure that the ointment reaches the right place. Apply the ointment in this way every 12 hours until the pain subsides. Complete the treatment duration course that your doctor has advised.
