Growth Scan in Hyderabad

What is Growth Scan?

An ultrasound scan performed during the last trimester of pregnancy to determine the growth of the baby is called a growth scan or well-being scan. This is done to know the baby’s size, weight, and to assess the health condition of the baby. The first fetal scan is recommended to be done between 28 weeks and 32 weeks of pregnancy to determine fetal growth and well being. Another scan and color doppler studies closer to your scheduled delivery date, that is between 36 and 40 weeks to measure the placental blood flow.

How is the growth scan done?

  • Trained Sonographers perform growth scans.
  • The scans are performed in dim light rooms to view the scans properly on the screen.
  • The patient is asked to lie on the bed and uncover the abdomen.
  • Then, the Sonographer applies gel on the abdomen to make good contact between the probe and the abdomen.
  • As the probe passes through the skin on the abdomen, black and white image is visible on the ultrasound screen.
  • The doctor will examine the health condition of the baby like position, weight, and movements through the image on the screen.
  • For further study, the Sonographer can perform a doppler scan to examine the placenta.

What are the uses of a Growth Scan?

Growth scan is used to:

  • Check the baby position - breech, oblique, or transverse
  • Examine the position of umbilical cord
  • Check the maturity and position of the placenta
  • Assess the amount of amniotic fluid
  • Know the position, size, and weight of the baby
  • Assess how a past cesarean scar appears
  • Examine the circulation and well being of the baby
  • Check blood circulation of the baby to the vital organs like brain and heart
  • Check for the presence of twin babies
  • Monitor the baby moves, stretches, and breath
  • Measure the abdominal circumference

How long does it take to complete a growth scan?

Usually, a growth scan takes around 30 minutes. Depending on the position of the baby during the scan time may increase.

What are the signs that an individual referred for a growth scan?

Gynecologist will suggest pregnant women to undergo a growth scan if she is having any of the below signs:

  • Vaginal fluid loss
  • Vaginal bleeding
  • Premature contractions
  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes or any other medical condition
  • Pain in the abdomen
  • Concern about the baby not moving properly

Is growth scan safe for the baby?

Yes, a growth scan is absolutely safe for both mother and the baby. The sonographers follow all the required guidelines to assure an individual a safe scan.
