1. What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a part of the traditional Chinese medicine of therapy. The process involves insertion of needles into the body at specific points to correct the body's energy flow. Though it is not completely based on scientific knowledge, it has gained popularity in recent times mainly for treatment of pain and other conditions.
2. Why is acupuncture performed?
Acupuncture is mainly used for treatment of pain and to promote overall well being. It is generally used to relieve pain associated with various disorders such as pain in the lower back, menstrual cramps, post operative pain, arthritis and other conditions.
3. Are there any risks associated with acupuncture?
Acupuncture needles, if sterilised and used, pose no risk of infection. The commonest side effect includes bruising at the site of needle insertion. Acupuncture is not recommended for individuals with bleeding disorders, pregnant women and individuals who have a pacemaker.
4. Are there any special instructions for preparation for acupuncture?
No prior preparation is required for acupuncture therapy.
5. Is it a painful procedure?
The procedure involves insertion of needles which may cause mild discomfort or a tingling sensation.
