IS TOOTH SENSITIVITY CRAMPING YOUR STYLE??

Tooth sensitivity can make eating and drinking a painful experience.

If you experience pain or discomfort when consuming foods or beverages that are hot, cold, sweet, or sour; when brushing or flossing; or even when breathing sharp, cold air ,then u may have "SENSITIVE TEETH".

WHAT CAUSES SENSITIVE TEETH?

Its a common dental problem that develops over time.

Most commonly caused due receding gums and enamel wear.

Tooth sensitivity can start to happen when the softer, inner part of the tooth called 'dentin' becomes exposed. Dentin lies under the enamel and the gums.

REASONS:
  1. ENAMEL WEAR: Frequent abusive tooth brushing or tooth grinding.

2.GUM RECESSION: Due to gum disease or aggressive brushing.

other (less commonly) reasons are lost filling, fractured tooth, tooth decay.

YOU HAVE SENSITIVITY WITH YOUR TEETH IF:

Pain  & discomfort in the mouth that occurs when teeth are exposed to sweet, sour or acidic foods, hot   and/or cold temperature.

Breathing in cold air.

PREVENTION:

  • Practicing good oral hygiene.
  • Do not brush vigorously in horizontal motion.
  • Use a soft bristle brush, in circular motion (or gentle up and down strokes)
  • Brushing twice daily for 2 min, each time and flossing once a day, can help reduce tooth sensitivity.
  • Reduced consumption of acidic foods and carbonated drinks also helps prevent tooth sensitivity.

HOW SHOULD I TACKLE MY TOOTH SENSITIVITY:

Only a dentist can confirm you have dentinal hypersensitivity.

After discovering you have tooth sensitivity. Talk to your dentist about what has caused you to have this problem, what you can do to relieve it and how to help prevent it from getting worse.

For someone with sensitive teeth, an advice by the dentist on the most suitable oral care protocol - inclusive of brushing technique-  frequency and duration of teeth brushing is of prime importance, to maintain the teeth from any further abrasion and trauma.
